PlayStation 6: Everything we know about the PS6 so far

It sounds like we'll hear more about a next-generation PlayStation sooner rather than later.

In early 2024, Sony Senior Vice President Naomi Matsuoka told Bloomberg, “Looking ahead, the PS5 will enter the final phase of its life cycle.” While he didn't directly say that a PlayStation 6 is in the works, we can assume the company is already thinking about its next console.

Although these are just rumors so far, it's never too early to speculate about the next-gen consoles. How does the PS6 compare to the PS5? Will some of the PS5's best games make their way to the PS6? And what about upcoming PS5 games that are launching soon?

Nothing is set in stone, but let's take a look at what the future of PlayStation might look like.

Speculations about the release date for PS6

The biggest clue as to when a PS6 could be released, or at least was planned at some point, points to 2027. This information comes from an official court document from Microsoft as part of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard: “Until SIE launches the next generation of its PlayStation console (which will likely be around [redacted]), it would have lost access to Call of Duty.” The date is redacted here, but investigators have linked this to the deal Microsoft offered Sony to keep Activision Blizzard games on PlayStation consoles through 2027. That would suggest Microsoft doesn't expect a new PlayStation until 2027 at the earliest.

If we look at past generations, this timeframe corresponds to the lifespan of past generations. The PlayStation 4 was seven years old before the PS5 came out, and the PlayStation 3 was also seven years old before its successor. The PS5 launched in 2020, meaning we'd have a seven-year console cycle again in 2027. We wouldn't bet on 2027 for sure, but anything from late 2027 onwards seems like a safe bet.

The price of a PS6 is impossible to estimate with any certainty. Until we know concrete details about the specs, we can't even come up with rough numbers to determine the price. However, based on past prices and spec rumors, it's hard to imagine it costing less than $500 at launch, if not closer to the dreaded $600 mark.

Exact specs for the PS6 are a bit scarce. Moore's Law is Dead has stated that it “knows with 100 percent certainty that Sony will continue its partnership with AMD to power the PS6 and PS5 Pro.” That would make sense, as it's the same chipset used in the PS5, so sticking with it would make things like backwards compatibility and cross-generational play a lot easier. The next generation of AMD chips are due to launch in 2025, so the PS6 could feature that chip.

We suspect that a new SSD will be included, as this was a major step on the PS5 to almost eliminate loading times, but no word on this has leaked out.

We would also expect at least 1 TB of storage space by the time the PS6 is released, especially if the console ends up being available digitally only.

PS6 Features

Insider Gaming claims to have a document on a unique feature being worked on for the PS6 called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This technology, according to Insider Gaming, will allow games to run in either 4K at 120 frames per second (fps) or 8K at 60 fps. A weaker version of PSSR is set to be implemented in the PS5 Pro, but will be fully utilized in the PS6.
