iPhone 16 series camera features and record button details leaked through hands-on video

The iPhone 16 family, consisting of the standard iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, is set to launch this September. Rumors about the new lineup have been rife for months, and just recently, a hands-on video of dummy iPhone 16 series units surfaced online. The video gives a glimpse into the camera specifications of upcoming Apple phones. The iPhone 16 lineup is also said to feature a brand new record button. The standard models are said to have a dual rear camera unit, while the Pro models appear to have three sensors on the back.

iPhone 16 series camera specifications leaked

In a video posted online by AppleInsider, the camera units and action button of the iPhone 16 series were leaked. According to the hands-on video of the dummy units, both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature a dual rear camera consisting of a 48-megapixel main wide-angle camera with f/1.6 aperture and up to 2x zoom and a secondary ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and 0.5x zoom. The f/2.2 aperture will be an upgrade from the f/2.4 available on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

In addition, the standard iPhone 16 series is said to feature a vertically stacked camera unit instead of a diagonal arrangement. The non-Pro iPhone models will likely support macro photography for the first time.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are said to feature a triple camera on the back, including a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto camera. The telephoto feature was previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. They could retain the 48-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.78 aperture and 2x optical zoom from the current lineup. They are said to feature 12-megapixel telephoto sensors with 5x optical zoom and an f/2.8 aperture. Additionally, the ultra-wide-angle camera could be upgraded to 48-megapixels with a pixel binning feature that uses 0.7-micron pixels when shooting at full resolution or 1.4-micron pixels when used as quad pixels. The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to support capturing ProRaw photos.

The report, citing sources, claims that with the iPhone 16, Apple will support a new image format called JPEG-XL, in addition to the existing HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw, and ProRAW Max formats. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will reportedly support 3K videos at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision.

The iPhone 16 may get a completely new record button

A capture button that will allow users to perform various actions such as launching the camera or recording a video is expected to be available in all iPhone 16 variants this year. It could be located in the bottom right corner and is expected to be capacitive. This DSLR-like button could be used to zoom in and out in the default app.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPhone models on September 10. The iPhone 16 Pro models will likely have slightly larger screens than their counterparts in the iPhone 15 lineup. All phones in the lineup could offer on-device AI features thanks to Apple Intelligence.
