Fact check: Rahul Gandhi's photo with foreign actress goes viral due to misleading and offensive claim

Vishvas News' investigation revealed that the viral post is fake. The picture of a foreign actress is being used to spread misleading information about Rahul Gandhi, contrary to the claim that he is married and has two children.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A photo of Rahul Gandhi, MP from Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, is going viral on social media. The picture shows him with a foreign woman. Some posts claim that she is his wife and has two children.

Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found that it was fake. The woman in the picture is Spanish actress Natalia Ramos and the claims of her being Rahul's wife are misleading.

What goes viral?

On August 20, 2024, Facebook user Rsmnaresh Shakya (archive link) shared a picture with the caption: “The truth about Roll_Vinci will soon come out. His wife is Jonita Vinci, his son is Nehak Vinci, 19, and his daughter is Minik Vinci, 15.”

The image caption reads: “Wikileaks has revealed that Raul Vinci is married and has two children living in London. His wife is Colombian. Their children are a 14-year-old boy named Niak and a 10-year-old girl named Mainak. Rahul Gandhi is misleading the country by claiming to be unmarried.”

The content of the viral post was shared verbatim by other users who believed it to be true. You can view the archive link of the viral post here.

Investigation

To verify the claim, Vishvas News examined the keyframes of the viral post using Google Lens. Our search led us to the X-handle of Spanish actress Natalia Ramos, where the same photo was posted on September 14, 2017, with the tags Rahul Gandhi and Berggruen Institute.

The caption reads“Last night with the eloquent and insightful Rahul Gandhi.”

During our search, we came across a report on Aaj Tak's website dated September 21, 2017, which stated that Rahul Gandhi met Spanish-Australian actress Natalia Ramos during his visit to America. Natalia also posted a picture of this meeting on her social media handles. During this visit, Rahul Gandhi participated in the India@70 program, which included events at UC Berkeley, Princeton University and Times Square.

In addition, we found the video of the event on the Berggruen Institute's YouTube channel, uploaded on September 22, 2017. The video showed that along with Rahul Gandhi, Milind Deora and Sam Pitroda also participated in the program.

During our investigation, we reached out to renowned journalist Adesh Rawal, who covers Congress, who confirmed that the viral post was misleading and offensive.

Rawal also addressed this issue on his account X and clarified that the Spanish actress's image was being misrepresented with misleading claims.
