CMPD officer remains hospitalized after fatal accident on I-485 ramp

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – One day after a serious accident, two Police Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officers and killed another person, one of the officers is still in the hospital.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Thursday on the off-ramp from I-485 Outer to Mt. Holly Road after an RV crashed into two CMPD cars. Officers were on the side road investigating a report of a stolen car.

Drone footage from the scene showed a CMPD patrol car so badly damaged it was barely recognizable. The officer inside the car was trapped until firefighters freed him. The RV landed on its side on the edge of the ramp.

In the hours following the accident, one of the officers was treated and released from the hospital.

Police have not yet released the name of the civilian killed, but said he worked for a company that reported the theft of the vehicle. The driver of the RV was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.

CMPD Major Ryan Butler acknowledged the emotional toll of such an accident in a press conference.

“Nobody who is involved in a situation like this comes away unmoved,” he said. “Whether you were in a vehicle that was struck, whether you were someone who was injured or you simply know someone who was involved, this affects multiple people and so it's a much more significant event than we might initially realize from just reading a headline.”

Why the RV rammed the cars is still under investigation, but police said charges could be filed.

About six hours after the accident, the exit was reopened.
