Gasoline prices: Another day of price reductions at the pumps at the end of the working week

Gasoline prices have dropped again across the country, with the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline falling to $3.374, according to AAA. Friday's price was lower than Thursday's, when a gallon of regular gasoline cost $3.387. Friday's price drop also meant that the price of regular gasoline fell every day this week.

Gas prices remain a major issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to run for re-election, Vice President Kamala Harris, the current Democratic presidential nominee, must outline how she will address the country's high gas prices and energy costs and how both will affect the economy and people's finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have fallen in recent weeks and months. However, gas prices are still significantly higher than they were during former President Donald Trump's administration.

Gas prices vary considerably between states. To see how expensive gas is in each state, click here. Here are gas prices for a gallon of regular gasoline in and around Washington, DC. But first, let's start with gas prices in Illinois, where the Democratic National Convention was held this week.

Illinois

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Illinois on Friday is $3.717. While this is not the highest price for gasoline in the country, it is among the highest in the country. Friday's price was lower than Thursday, when gasoline cost $3.737 per gallon. This was also a decrease from last week, when a gallon of regular gasoline cost $3.83 in Illinois.

Washington, DC

Gasoline prices dropped in Washington, DC on Friday. A gallon of regular gasoline now costs $3.631, which is more than the national average. On Thursday, gas prices were slightly higher, at $3.643. A week ago, a gallon of regular gasoline cost $3.667. The above prices are also cheaper than the price of a gallon of regular gasoline a month ago, when it cost $3.722.

Delaware

Gasoline prices also fell in Delaware on Friday. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline fell to $3.214, down from Thursday's price of $3.24. Gasoline prices in the First State are also lower than a week ago, when residents paid $3.303 per gallon for regular gasoline. Prices are also lower than a month ago, when regular gasoline cost $3.401 per gallon in the First State.

Maryland

On Friday, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Maryland is $3.303. That's down from Thursday, when it cost $3.329 per gallon. A week ago, regular gasoline in the state cost $3.386 per gallon. The price drops continue a trend that began about a month ago, when the price of gasoline in Maryland was much higher, costing residents $3.485 per gallon of regular gasoline.

Virginia

Virginia had the second-lowest prices in the region on Friday at $3.249 per gallon. That was down from Thursday when the price was $3.263. A week ago, the price of a gallon of regular gasoline in Virginia was $3.31 and a month ago it was $3.411.

Hawaii

Hawaii is the state with the highest gasoline prices in the country. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.657 on Friday, up slightly from the price of $4.65 per gallon on Thursday. A week ago, a gallon of regular gasoline in the Aloha State cost $4.667. That's about the same price for a gallon of regular gasoline as a month ago, when gasoline was only slightly more expensive at $4.675.

Mississippi

Mississippi remains the state with the cheapest gasoline in the country. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Mississippi is $2.921 on Friday, down slightly from Thursday's price of $2.93 per gallon. Mississippi is one of three other states with gasoline prices under $3 per gallon, the other two being Tennessee and Oklahoma. This is a new development in Oklahoma and Tennessee, but prices under $3 per gallon have been a consistent trend in the state, even as recently as a month ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $2.985.
