Summary of the summer program for youth shooting sports

MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Conservation Club once again held its annual summer youth shooting sports program. More than 30 local children were able to participate in the program this summer. They met every Monday evening in July and August to learn important firearm safety rules and participate in supervised instruction at the club's shooting range. The participants were able to try target shooting with a .22 rifle, archery and trap shooting and at the same time learn safety, discipline, respect and fun in shooting sports. Instructor Jay Mendels pointed out that much of the equipment, ammunition and supplies over the years have come from NRA grants. “The NRA is the world's largest advocate of youth firearms safety and education, and their support with materials and training makes programs like ours possible,” added Mendels, who has led the program – along with the help of several dedicated club volunteers – at the Conservation Club for the past 15 years.
