Lower prices for cherry and specialty tomatoes in July

Compared to 2023

Cherry tomatoes and specialty tomatoes are popular. The special tomatoes fetch good prices, which are often significantly higher than the traditional loose tomatoes or vine tomatoes. Compared to last July, prices for cherry tomatoes and specialty tomatoes were lower in the Netherlands as well as in Spain, Italy and France. This is according to a new update of the European Commission's tomato dashboard.

The average price per kilogram in the popular category of tomatoes fluctuates greatly. At 4.61 euros per kilo, tomatoes are by far the most expensive in France. In the Netherlands they fetched an average of 2.08 euros last month, while in Spain 1.50 euros and in Italy an average of 1.52 euros are paid for a kilo.

With prices like these, prices are still above the average tomato price achieved in July. The EU average is 1.28 euros per kilo. In contrast to the generally difficult June, this is again slightly above the five-year average.

In the Netherlands, the average price per kilogram for cherry and specialty tomatoes is still 73 percent above the five-year average. The situation is different in Spain, Italy and France. In Spain, prices are 15 percent lower, in France 8 percent lower and in Italy prices are exactly at the five-year average.

The biggest price deviation compared to 2023 is in Spain, where the price is 37 percent lower than last July. In the Netherlands, the price is 16 percent lower.
