Prisoners take control of a prison in Russia

Scene in Volgograd prison in Russia, where some prisoners have taken control

Moscow: Inmates in a prison in Russia's Volgograd region today took control of the entire complex, killing officers and taking several hostages.

It is the second event of its kind in Russia since June.

“During a meeting of a disciplinary commission, the convicts took penitentiary employees hostage,” the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement.

“There are victims,” the statement continued, without giving a number.

Videos posted on social media showed four prison officers lying on the floor, some in pools of blood, while hostage takers shouted that they were IS “mujahideen.”

According to Russian investigators, “several prisoners” were involved in the attack in the IK-19 penal colony in the town of Surovikino, about 850 kilometers south of the capital Moscow.
