Tennis fans get something to eat for the first time at the US Open

From lobster rolls to steaks to the signature Honey Deuce drink, tennis fans this week got a preview of the food and drink options available at this year's US Open.

Some of the chefs shared what it feels like to be part of the Grand Slam event, which attracted over 900,000 people last year.

What you need to know

  • More than 900,000 fans attended the US Open last year
  • A preview on Thursday gave fans the chance to sample some of the dishes from this year's US Open
  • New additions to the menu include an upscale chicken nugget topped with caviar

“Gratitude. I'm just grateful to be here,” said Kwame Onwuachi, founder and executive chef of Tatiana, an Afro-Caribbean-inspired restaurant in Manhattan.

“For me, it’s a place of comfort,” said Pat LaFrieda, CEO of Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors.

“What I’m most excited about is having the opportunity to serve food to such an international group of people,” added celebrity chef Alex Guarnachelli.

Each of the chefs told NY1 that being part of the US Open was special, one reason being that it offered a very different experience than other restaurants they had been to before.

“This is every chef’s dream restaurant because it opens and closes in 10 days, and we love that,” Guarnachelli said.

A new addition this year is the restaurateur behind COTE Korean Steakhouse, Simon Kim, who is launching COQODAQ, an upscale chicken nugget with caviar.

“We want to do our best and share it with the US Open,” Kim said.

The chefs presented some of their favorite dishes.

“I have a cavatappi pasta,” said Guarnacelli. “That means corkscrew in Italian and the sauce, the yellow tomato sauce, just gets stuck in it.”

“The Dominican pepper steak,” Onwuachi said. “It's a ribeye steak with this pepper steak sauce on it.”

The US Open begins on Monday, August 26th and runs through September 8th.
