Former West U developer faces up to 20 years in prison for $1.5 million wire fraud

HOUSTON – Prosecutors release new details about Brett Detamore, the former West University housing developer who allegedly faked his disappearance in June 2023.

Our Bryce Newberry reported how Detamore appeared in federal court last week and pleaded not guilty. Appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Bennett, he appeared out of custody and appeared relaxed and laughing while talking to a family member before his case was called.

His appearance has changed drastically since his alleged “faked” disappearance, including a shaved beard, shorter haircut and a slimmer figure. In a new statement from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, Detamore changed his plea to guilty and admitted to wire fraud.

The press release goes on to say that the 39-year-old admitted to stealing at least $1.5 million for his own use by misusing funds originally intended for the construction of private homes. Detamore issued fake invoices to banks that held construction loans for the house he was to build. He then received these invoices from the bank and transferred them to his personal account for his own benefit.

As part of his guilty plea, Detamore faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000, as well as full restitution of the $1.5 million he took from the homeowners. U.S. District Judge George Hanks will announce the sentence on November 5.
