Douglas Coleman III taken off the field on a stretcher

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Chicago Bears defensive back Douglas Coleman III was carried off the field on a stretcher at Arrowhead Stadium during a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Coleman was injured early in the third quarter when he attempted to tackle Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell. Coleman pushed Powell's arm to his head and Powell fell to the ground.

He was able to walk unaided and took a flight back to Chicago on Friday morning. He was released from the hospital after an overnight evaluation.

It was a frightening scene as players from both teams knelt while medical personnel tended to Coleman, restrained him on a board and then placed him on a stretcher and an ambulance. Bears players and coaches came from the sidelines to support Coleman as he was taken away.

Coach Matt Eberflus said Coleman moved his limbs and gave the Bears a thumbs up.

“That was really encouraging for our football team,” Eberflus said of Coleman’s signal.

Coleman, 26, played in the Canadian Football League in 2022 and 2023. The Bears signed him to a contract in January.

In the Bears' last preseason game, which they won 34-17, several players were injured.

Offensive player Larry Borom injured his right ankle on the second play of the game and left the field on a cart. Eberflus said Borom will have a scan of his ankle on Friday.

It was a significant injury in a game without a starter, as Borom was supposed to be the Bears' swing tackle this season, backing up left tackle Braxton Jones and right tackle Darnell Wright. Borom can also play both guard positions.

Borom, a 2021 fifth-round pick, started 23 games and played in 39 games over the past three seasons for the Bears.

Wide receiver Nsimba Webster also left the field on a cart after injuring his groin in the second quarter, and running back Ian Wheeler suffered a knee injury, Eberflus said.
