Hopewell nonprofit that protects people from crime needs help

HOPEWELL, Va. (WWBT) – An organization that guides people from a destructive path to a hopeful one needs volunteers.

Real Life, based in Richmond, provides resources to anyone at risk of becoming involved in violence and crime.

Although they have already changed many lives, the founder says they need additional help.

Sarah Scarborough founded Real Life in 2017 and it began in Richmond Prison.

However, when people left the city, they often returned to a life of crime.

So she got involved in the community and helped people stay on the right path by showing them a new way before they became involved in violence.

The organization brings people together with life coaches. Many of them have been in prison themselves but have turned their lives around.

They provide the children with food, clothing and even diapers and ultimately work toward goals such as education.

“The number one goal of one of the people we work with locally was to go back to school,” Scarbrough said. “He had been kicked out, and so our life coach was able to work with him and he just started school again.”
The organization has a handful of volunteers, but Scarborough says she would welcome 20 to 30 more people to get involved.

The group goes door to door in communities affected by violence, offering residents any support they need.

This year they have already knocked on 1,500 doors. Scarborough says with additional help they could reach even more people.
