Man charged in Minneapolis mosque shooting

Charges have been filed against the man who police say shot someone outside a mosque in Minneapolis last week.

MINNEAPOLIS – The man who police say shot and killed someone outside a Minneapolis mosque now faces multiple felony charges.

It happened on Monday after evening prayers outside the Masjid An-Nur mosque. According to the indictment, 75-year-old Abdul Kareem was leaving the mosque when he saw a drug deal going on outside. He approached the van and said they were not allowed to sell drugs there. The driver drove away, but according to the indictment he drove back and shot Kareem.

Yancy Hall of Shakopee was charged with drive-by shooting of a person and two counts of second-degree assault.

The criminal complaint states that witnesses saw the shooting and described Hall and his van. Investigators learned that Hall was under investigation for drug charges and his van was being pursued. Hall was arrested and the criminal complaint states that he admitted to the shooting.

In a press conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara promised more patrols in the area, as community leaders say crime has increased recently. Mosque leaders also indicated that a plan to increase security around the mosque is being accelerated in light of the shooting.

Meanwhile, police and mosque officials are expressing hope that the person they describe as “their darling” will make a full recovery.
