How to use the mandolin safely when preparing the viral cucumber salad

Social Media is inundated with people who cut with a razor-sharp knife called a mandolin Cucumbers. However, you also cut your fingers in the process.

Jackson Dean and his girlfriend decided to make a cucumber salad in his kitchen that went viral on social media Los Angeles.

“I didn't know how dangerous it was, and I didn't realize how fast it cut,” Dean tells Inside Edition.

Dean was recording a video of himself making a salad when he cut his finger.

“A lot of people actually thought it was a fake,” says Dean.

Dean went to the emergency room.

He blames himself for the mishap, saying he wasn't paying attention and was instead concentrating on showing his nearly six million social media followers how to make the salad.

“I was just trying to talk to them, looking at the phone and it happened so fast,” says Dean. “I didn't realize how much I had cut off.”

Inside Edition has a simple mandolin Security Tips from the Hello Fresh test kitchen in Manhattan.

It is best to hold the cucumber at the top, but when you reach the end, protect your fingers with a guard.

Dean says there won't be any cucumber salad for a while.

“I’m grateful that I can laugh about it,” he says.

Each year, over 200,000 kitchen accidents occur that result in emergency room visits.
