Injury schedule for promising Colts young player is set

With tight end Jelani Woods, the Indianapolis Colts have a young, potentially decisive player in their offense. The big problem, however, is that he is struggling with health problems as he begins his third season in the NFL.

Woods had to leave last Saturday's preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals early due to a toe injury. Now NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that Woods will be out for “about four months” after his surgery today.

Schultz wrote on X on Friday: “Sources: TE Jelani Woods underwent successful surgery today on a turf toe and will be out approximately four months. The team hopes Woods will be able to return in time for the playoffs around Christmas.”

Woods had a mediocre training camp and preseason this summer after returning to the field following an injury-plagued 2023 season. As a rookie in 2022, he caught 25 passes for 312 yards (12.5 avg.), 3 touchdowns and 16 first downs, but consecutive hamstring injuries to different legs kept him out of the lineup for the entire duration of his sophomore season.

With Woods potentially out for the next four months, the Colts could move on with Kylen Granson, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory as tight ends.
