Fatal accident on the Zapata and Jim Hog Co. route leads to the closure of Highway 16 and three deaths

ZAPATA, Texas (KGNS) – Three people were found dead after an accident was reported on the Zapata-Jim Hogg County line.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the accident was reported after 1 p.m. on Friday, August 23.

Two vehicles were involved in the accident. However, the cause of the accident is currently unknown and the victims have yet to be identified.

A vehicle caught fire as a result of the impact and two people and a smaller person were inside. However, due to the severity of the burns, the Zapata Fire Department could not confirm whether the person was a child or a pet.

The driver of the other vehicle was picked up by the Zapata Fire Department and transported to an unknown location by Jim Hogg EMS.

The crime scene was turned over to Jim Hogg as soon as authorities arrived.

According to the Zapata County Sheriff's Office, Highway 16 will be closed for five hours during the investigation.
