3News Investigates: Video shows De'Lawnte Hardy's escape attempt

Hardy is accused of killing both his grandmother and Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter.

CLEVELAND – Body camera footage shows De'Lawnte Hardy, accused of killing police in Cleveland,'s latest escape attempt from the Cuyahoga County Jail, from the moment he runs from his cell until he is once again handcuffed behind bars.

Hardy has been in jail since his July 4 arrest on charges of murdering his grandmother in Garfield Heights before killing Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter. His bail was originally set at $10 million, but it appears he had other ideas about his July 20 incarceration.

The footage shows the beginning of his escape attempt when Hardy is let out of his cell to shower, then runs down an open hallway as a guard screams, “Where are you running to?!”

Video clips from several guards show that Hardy was caught within seconds, but did not escape unscathed. After being stopped, Hardy fights with four guards at once, kicking several correctional officers to the ground during the scuffle.

The footage shows prison staff springing into action immediately. Correctional officers can be seen running through the corridors and rushing out of elevators to help their colleagues as quickly as possible.

The video shows that it took a dozen police officers to get Hardy under control. Some shouted orders, others tried to restrain him. Eventually, officers handcuffed him and took him to a new cell.

At this point, officers were no longer willing to take any chances. The footage shows at least five officers crammed into an elevator as they transported Hardy. There's barely enough room for everyone, but escorting the suspect seemed to be their top priority.

After Hardy was finally moved to a new cell, footage showed at least ten officers working to put the man accused of murder back behind bars.

Cuyahoga County has not filed new charges against Hardy for the escape attempt, but he was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before trial and his bail was also revoked.
