Daughter accused of murdering her mother arrested and charged with premeditated murder

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office reported on August 23 that charges of first-degree murder have been filed against the daughter accused of killing her mother in their Broad River Community home.

According to a press release, 40-year-old Danya Kathryn Dewey is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center without bail. The sheriff's office said it was assisted by Asheville police in arresting Dewey.

“Dewey's vehicle was located by Asheville Police Department patrol officers. She was identified in the vehicle and refused to exit when ordered,” Christina Esmay, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, told News 13.

She said officers were able to de-escalate the situation and convince Dewey to exit the vehicle. She was then taken into custody without incident. Asheville police told News 13 the arrest was made at 9:05 p.m. on August 22 near the intersection of Vivian Avenue and Dortch Avenue.
