Malden, MA police shooting results released – NBC Boston

A Malden police officer who fired her weapon at an armed man during a reported robbery had justified the use of force, the Middlesex County district attorney said in a report released Friday.

Officer Amanda Grenier fired her weapon at 31-year-old Dominique Matthew Long after police responded to a report that a man attacked and robbed a woman on Eastern Avenue on May 22. The prosecutor said Long was armed with a knife and was fighting with a woman when police arrived.

When officers tried to intervene, Long approached them with the knife, the prosecutor said.

Officers initially used stun guns, but the prosecutor said that did not stop Long, who continued to advance toward one of the officers. At that moment, a second officer fired her weapon, striking Long, who was taken to the hospital for treatment. Long was taken to the hospital and survived his injuries.

A shooting occurred Wednesday morning in Malden, Massachusetts, police said, prompting an extensive investigation on Eastern Avenue near Linwood Street. “Officer Amanda Grenier reasonably believed that Officer Cameron Selfridge was in imminent danger of death or serious bodily harm and that no means other than those employed could have prevented such injury,” District Attorney Marian Ryan wrote in a media statement.

Long has been charged with armed robbery, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, intimidation of a witness and assault. Officials say during the incident, he threw a cup at the female victim and struck her in the head before taking her iPad. Long is also accused of threatening a witness with a knife.
