Mira Mesa man arrested for alleged attempted ATM break-in with explosives

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A Mira Mesa man who allegedly used explosives in two unsuccessful attempts to steal cash from ATMs was arrested Friday.

Son Thanh Nguyen, 44, is accused of improvising explosive devices during failed attempts to rob ATMs in University City and Rancho Bernardo.

According to federal prosecutors, the first attempt was made on June 8 just before 3:30 a.m. at an ATM outside the California Coast Credit Union on Governor Drive. Nguyen allegedly placed a 5-gallon plastic container with a pouring spout next to the ATM and inserted a PVC hose into the ATM.

There was a small explosion, but according to the US Attorney's Office, he was unable to steal any money.

On June 28, shortly after 2 a.m., he allegedly attempted to attack a First Citizen's Bank branch in Rancho Bernardo again – with similar results.

With the help of surveillance footage, the suspect and his vehicle were tracked.

In Nguyen's house, investigators found chemicals and equipment allegedly used to build the explosives, as well as clothing consistent with that worn during the attacks, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Nguyen was arrested by FBI agents on Friday and is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Monday.
