OCPD releases video and new details on fatal police shooting

IT ALL STARTED WITH A MENTAL HEALTH CALL. YES, PEOPLE. THE POLICE TRYED TO DE-ESCALATE THE SITUATION FOR ABOUT AN HOUR BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THIS SUSPECT ENDED UP POINTING A GUN AT THE POLICE. THE OCPD SAYS THIS WAS A LAST RESORT AND AN UNFORTUNATE ENDING TO A TENSE SITUATION. THE POLICE COMING UP FOUND BRANDON LINA IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD STREET WHERE HE WAS RUNNING AROUND WITH A GUN. POLICE SAY THIS SUSPECT, BRANDON LINA, WAS ARMED WHEN CRISIS INTERVENTION WORKERS ENTERED THE AREA. POLICE TRAINED TO RESPOND TO MENTAL HEALTH SITUATIONS. I AM A MEMBER OF THE CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM. THIS ALL HAPPENED AT A HOUSE IN EAGLES LANDING NEAR SUMNER ROAD AND I-240. POLICE OFFICERS WERE TRYING TO ESTABLISH A CONNECTION WITH LINA TO GET HIM TO PUT DOWN THE GUN AND END THE SITUATION PEACEFULLY. THIS MAN, I MEAN, WE'RE JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU, BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT THE GUN DOWN SO WE CAN TALK TO YOU. THE POLICE SAY THEY REALIZED THIS WAS A SUICIDED MAN ON THE STREET, ARMED WITH A GUN. THERE WERE MULTIPLE ATTEMPTATIONS TO GET LINA TO PUT HIS GUN DOWN BEFORE HE PUT IT DOWN FOR ME AGAIN. THIS WAY I CAN ENSURE YOU ARE SAFE. AND MY POLICE OFFICERS ARE SAFE. THE VIDEO SHOWS HE THEN POINTING HIS GUN AT THE POLICE AFTER A POLICE OFFICER HIT HIM WITH A LESS LETHAL BULLET. AND THEN THE SHOOTING INVOLVING A POLICE OFFICER HAPPENED. POLICE OFFICERS FIRED LESS THAN LETHAL 40MM ROUNDS AT LINA. LINA STILL REFUSED TO LISTEN TO THE POLICE OFFICERS' COMMANDS. Police said Lena was armed when officers from the crisis intervention team, who are trained to respond to mental health issues, arrived on the scene. Officers tried multiple times to get Lena to put down his weapon. Video shows the moment he pointed the gun at police after an officer shot him with a non-lethal bullet. “The officers fired non-lethal 40-millimeter projectiles at Lena. He still refused to comply with the officer's commands,” Littlejohn said. After the shooting, three officers were placed on leave pending an investigation into the shooting. On August 2, at approximately 3:10 a.m., Oklahoma City police officers responded to a report of a suicidal man walking on the street armed with a gun in the 7000 block of Eagles Landing.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation for about an hour, but then opened fire when 47-year-old Brandon Lena pointed his weapon at police.

Officials said this was a last resort and an unfortunate end to a tense situation.

“Officers responding to the incident found Brandon Lena walking in the street armed with a handgun,” said Captain Valerie Littlejohn of the Oklahoma City Police Department.

According to police, Lena was armed when officers from the Crisis Intervention Team (CTI), who are trained to deal with mental health issues, arrived on the scene.

Officers tried multiple times to get Lena to put down his weapon. The video shows the moment he pointed the gun at police after an officer shot him with a non-lethal bullet.

“The officers fired non-lethal 40-millimeter projectiles at Lena. He still refused to comply with the officers' commands,” Littlejohn said.

After the shooting, three officers were placed on leave until the shooting was resolved. There were no other injuries.
