Wadena man sentenced to federal prison | Crime

A Waterloo man who was living in Wadena when his involvement in numerous weapons violations was discovered was sentenced to more than four years in a federal prison on July 23, 2024.

David Jerald Samuell Chiles, 34, of Waterloo was sentenced to his prison term after pleading guilty on Jan. 24 to criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon and illegal drug use, and making false statements to purchase a firearm.

Evidence at the guilty plea and sentencing hearing established that Chiles was involved in a shooting in Waterloo on May 9, 2022, in which two people were injured. On August 5, 2022, Chiles made false statements about his status as a convicted felon in order to purchase a shotgun from a gun dealer in Waterloo.

Fayette County Sheriff's officers went to Chiles' Wadena residence on October 2, 2023 to arrest him for an unrelated incident and found him in possession of drugs and another firearm. A search warrant was executed and methamphetamine, marijuana, and an assault rifle were found and seized.

Chiles was sentenced to 57 months in prison by Chief Judge CJ Williams of the U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. After his prison term, he will also have to serve three years of probation. There is no parole in the federal system. Chiles is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals until he can be transferred to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Reinert and investigated by the Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
