MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Washington – If you want to enjoy delicious food for under $20, head to Mountlake Terrace!

Baguus Little Asia specializes in Pan-Asian cuisine at happy hour prices, all day long.

Husband and wife team Takao Kikuchi and Yuko Abe were inspired to try the concept after running Dragonfish in downtown Seattle for 20 years.

“We had a very, very successful happy hour at Dragonfish, it was voted number one in the city,” Kikuchi said. “So we talked about opening the new restaurant and said, 'Why don't we just open a happy hour up here?'”

Prices start at $3.95 and go up to $15 (for a hearty teriyaki rice bowl with Copper River salmon).

There is also a self-service beer and wine bar where customers can pour their own drinks.

And the name? It's pronounced “buh-GOOSE,” a word the couple first heard during a trip to Malaysia.

“We were playing golf and on one hole I happened to hit a great shot. That doesn't happen very often. And the caddy said 'Baguus!'” Kikuchi said. “Baguus means great, nice, funny. We loved the sound – Baguus.”

Abe creates recipes with flavors from across Southeast Asia. The menu includes Dragonfish's famous noodles, spring onion pancakes, Vietnamese bar eggs and the popular Thai chicken pizza.

“We get a lot of our recipe ideas and ingredient ideas from our travel experiences because we love traveling,” she said. “Our last visit [to Malaysia] a few months ago we actually took a cooking class.”

She also draws inspiration from her childhood in Japan, where nutrition education was compulsory in schools.

“Don't get me wrong, I love fries,” she says with a laugh. “But we also appreciate where the food comes from, how it was made and who made it.”

Baguus isn't just a food service. It's a way to share the cultures they love with their community – and that's something special.

“It’s very satisfying,” Abe said through tears.

Kikuchi hugged her and added, “So many people say, 'This is fantastic, this is so great!' I'm glad, these are my wife's recipes!”

Baguu's Little Asia is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday. It is located at 23511 56th Ave. West in Mountlake Terrace.
