Massive iPhone 16 leak just revealed camera upgrades and specs for all four new iPhones

If you think the new iPhone 16 series will only offer mediocre camera upgrades, think again. An exclusive new report has just revealed all the camera changes planned for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, as well as the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

According to AppleInsider, there are some pretty big changes coming to all four models, starting with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, so our list of the best camera phones could be about to see a pretty big shake-up.

As previously reported, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will come with two cameras like the iPhone 15 series, but they will be stacked vertically to enable spatial video recording. This will allow you to watch 3D videos using the Meta Quest 3 headset or the Apple Vision Pro.

The main camera remains at 48MP resolution and f/1.6 aperture, offering the equivalent of a 2x telephoto zoom. However, the ultra-wide camera is said to have a faster f/2.2 aperture (up from f/2.4). This allows for better low-light performance, which is a good thing, as the Pixel 9 series is proving to be even better than the iPhone 15 so far.

Another tidbit is that both the regular iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are said to support macro photography – that would be a first.

Additionally, Apple Insider says the rumored Capture Button will be included on all four new iPhone 16 models. This capacitive button will be located in the bottom right corner of the design, meaning that in landscape mode, the button will be directly below your index finger in the top right.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported how this capture button would work. You can half-press the capture button to activate autofocus, fully press it to take a photo, and slide your finger along the button to zoom in and out.

Those willing to spend a little more will likely also receive several camera upgrades for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

You'll find a 48MP wide-angle sensor with f/1.78 aperture and 1.22-micron pixels on both models. The biggest change is that the regular iPhone 16 Pro will reportedly get the same 12MP tetraprism lens with 5x zoom that was previously reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has an f/2.8 aperture.

It gets even better. The ultra-wide camera on the new iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be expanded from 12MP to 48MP, so you can crop images and still get great detail. AppleInsider says you'll get 0.7-micron pixels at full resolution and 1.4-micron pixels in Quad Pixel mode with pixel binning. It's just speculation, but Apple could extend ProRAW support to the ultra-wide lens as well.

On the video side, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may support 3K video at 120 frames per second, complete with Dolby Vision.

Adding support for a potential new format called JPEG-XL could mean the iPhone 16 series has significantly improved cameras compared to the iPhone 15. So maybe Apple isn't pinning all its hopes on Apple intelligence to get people to upgrade after all.
