Video surveillance of vandalism on penguin sculpture released

Police are investigating the damage caused to a penguin sculpture on display as part of a charity art trail in Worcester and have released video footage of the vandalism.

Three penguins fell victim to hunting last week, one of which had to be rescued from the River Severn by specialist firefighters.

The footage shows a person pushing the penguin off its stand, then kicking and trampling it and then disappearing with a second person, West Mercia Police said.

A total of 80 penguins and chicks were put on display last month as part of the Waddle of Worcester walk to raise funds for St Richard's Hospice.

One day after their exhibition, two more sculptures were damaged.

The vandalism was caught on camera outside Worcester Sewage Treatment Plant on Bromwich Parade at around 01:00 BST.

Sergeant Sam Mott said: “I am aware that the footage does not show a clear picture of the two suspects, but I am appealing to anyone with information to come forward if they recognise their clothing or demeanour, or if they saw two people in the area walking towards Bromwich Parade at the time of the incident.”

“The footage shows a suspect filming the damage caused and you may have seen this footage shared somewhere.

“This incident has caused great concern among many people in our community. Any information you have can help us find those responsible.”
