A 15-year-old boy has been arrested by German police after three people were killed and several injured in a mass stabbing attack at a diversity festival – but the perpetrator is still on the run.

Police believe the teenager spoke to the male attacker shortly before the stabbing last night. They are currently questioning him while they continue to search for the perpetrator.

A major manhunt was launched last night for the lone gunman who began attacking people shortly after 9.30pm on Friday as thousands gathered in the central square in Solingen, western Germany, for a celebration to mark the city's 650th anniversary.th Anniversary.

Eight people were injured, four of them “very seriously.” It is unclear whether the manhunt is ongoing after the arrest reported by Reuters.

“The police are currently conducting a large-scale manhunt for the perpetrator,” said a police statement on Saturday morning.

They have assembled a large contingent of forces around Solingen city centre, including special units.

“Both victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” they added.

The festival of diversity began on Friday and was scheduled to run until Sunday. Several stages in the main streets offered live music, cabaret and acrobatics. The authorities cancelled the rest of the event over the weekend.

Perpetrator is still on the run despite arrest of 15-year-old

The police assume that the perpetrator is still at large and that the arrested 15-year-old is not suspected of being behind the attack.

Two witnesses told police that shortly before the stabbing they had overheard a conversation between the 15-year-old and the alleged perpetrator about the crime.

What they had heard only became clear to the witnesses after the attack.

The teenager was arrested in connection with the stabbings, but he is not accused of being the perpetrator – he is only accused of knowing about it.

According to the police, the perpetrator is still on the run.
