Death of woman found after fire in Derry flat is suspicious, police say | Derry

The body of a woman was found after a fire broke out in an apartment in Derry.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a building on Harvey Street at 4:15 a.m. Saturday.

The woman, who was found in a ground-floor apartment, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they were investigating the circumstances of the “suspicious” death.

Nearby Waterloo Street and Chamberlain Street were closed and people were advised to avoid the area.

Mark H. Durkan, SDLP MP for Foyle, said a full police investigation was underway following the “harrowing and heartbreaking” discovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with a family who wakes up this morning to the worst news possible,” he wrote on Facebook. “Please, please come forward if you have any information that could help police with their investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously via the website or on 0800 555 111.

Police are particularly asking anyone with dashcam or doorbell camera footage of the area between 2 and 5 a.m. to come forward.
