Man accused of leaving a bomb outside the Attorney General's office changes his plea to guilty

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) – Kyle Calvert, the 26-year-old suspect The defendant, who is accused of placing an explosive device outside the Attorney General's office in Montgomery on February 24, pleads guilty to intentional damage to property with an explosive device.

Calvert was brought into the courtroom by the U.S. Marshals and his lawyer explained the details of his confession.

In April, he initially pleaded not guilty for intentional damage to property with explosives and one charge of possession of an unregistered explosive device.

The US Attorney's Office has decided to drop one of the charges against him and is demanding a prison sentence of nine years.

As part of his plea, Judge Kelly Pate and his attorney asked Calvert a series of questions, including questions about his mental health. He told Judge Pate his medications for ADHD and an antidepressant had been changed since his incarceration, but that would not affect his plea. His attorney then asked questions about February 24, the day the explosive device was found in the Attorney General's office. Calvert admitted to traveling to Montgomery and leaving “Support Your Local Antifa” stickers at various government buildings there, but when Judge Pate asked him if he was a member of the Antifa group, he said no.

He then admitted to placing the explosive device outside the building and detonating it. When asked if he knew where he placed the device, he said he knew it was the Attorney General's office.

Judge Pate accepted his plea agreement, but the case will now go to another district judge who will sentence Calvert, and that could happen within the next 90 days.
