Carlos Alcaraz's participation in the US Open is in question after an incident that led to the cancellation of a training session | Tennis | Sport

Carlos Alcaraz has suffered a serious injury shock ahead of his first match at the 2024 US Open next week. A tense moment led to the Spaniard abruptly abandoning his practice match against Francisco Cerundolo on Saturday.

Alcaraz is one of the heavyweight contenders in the men's tournament at Flushing Meadows and opened his Grand Slam account with a win at the US Open in 2022 – when he was still a teenager.

His preparation for the tournament was anything but ideal: At the beginning of the month, he was eliminated in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters due to a surprising three-set loss to veteran Gael Monfils.

And things seem to be getting worse for Alcaraz, who sprained his ankle while training with world number 29 Cerundolo. Training was immediately halted so Alcaraz could speak to his team and the 21-year-old quickly disappeared behind the scenes.

It remains to be seen whether Alcaraz can recover in time for his US Open first-round match against Li Tu, currently scheduled for Tuesday next week. Alcaraz enters next week's match as the number three seed behind Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.
