FULTON COUNTY, Georgia – More than a dozen people are accused of involvement in smuggling contraband into the Fulton County Jail.

Channel 2 Action News was the only television station that was on site with investigators when they arrested some of the suspects.

Mark Winne, investigative reporter for Channel 2 learned that in April, investigations were launched into those who brought illegal items into the jail. The sheriff's office says they were responsible for transactions valued at over $1 million.

“We have found that outside criminals are influencing what is happening inside and outside of our community,” said Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat.

In connection with the investigation, eight people aged between 18 and 57 were arrested and Winne spoke to some of them during her arrest.

“Are you involved in bringing contraband into the Fulton County Jail?” Winne asked.

“Contraband in Fulton County Jail? Contraband? What the [expletive]?” replied suspect Contrell Simpson.

“I don’t know anyone in there,” shouted another.
