Kyle Shanahan describes 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall's shoulder injury – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

LAS VEGAS – Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has not missed a single game during his five-year, 55-game college career.

And the 49ers continue to hope that he will not miss his first NFL game.

“I hope so,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan replied when asked if he expected Pearsall to be available for the Week 1 game against the New York Jets on Sept. 9 at Levi's Stadium.

“We'll see how he goes this week. I hope to get back to training this week. If that's the case, that's a pretty good sign that he could be available.”

Pearsall suffered a shoulder subluxation during his seventh practice of training camp on August 6. He missed the first four practices of the summer due to a hamstring strain.

A shoulder subluxation occurs when the head of the shoulder partially slips out of the socket and then quickly springs back into its original position. Shanahan described it as “a pretty normal thing.”

Pearsall has not suffered any structural damage to his shoulder and surgery is not an option at this time.

It was the second time Pearsall had suffered from the condition since the 49ers selected him with the No. 31 overall pick in the draft. When he was injured in the spring, he didn't miss much time during the offseason program. Pearsall continued to practice wearing a blue jersey to signal that he was not to be targeted.

Shanahan said Pearsall also suffered a shoulder subluxation in college, but downplayed the idea that it was a chronic condition.

“He did it in college – I think his third year,” Shanahan said. “About 50 percent of people coming out of college do it. That wasn't really the problem. He did it for the first time with us in OTAs.”

“When you do that, it's sensitive. Then he did it again here a few weeks ago. It's sensitive, so you want to give him time to recover from that.”

Pearsall continues to work out, running and catching passes at the team's practice facility while undergoing physical therapy to stabilize and strengthen the muscles around his shoulder. He traveled with the team to Las Vegas for the 49ers' final preseason game, but did not play.

The 49ers' tentative practice schedule calls for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday before they begin a regular work week and prepare for Monday night's opening game against the Jets.
