US presidential election: JD Vance's criticism of Donald Trump goes viral on TikTok; here's what he said

The Ohio senator's comments are now taking revenge on Donald Trump's vice presidential candidate in the form of a viral hit on the social media app TikTok. In 2016, JD Vance declared he would never be a Trump guy. DJ duo Casa Di and Steve Terrell sampled Vance's comments from a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose while promoting his memoir Hillbilly Elegy to create the 22-second audio clip.

In the video, Vance can be heard saying that he's not a Trump guy. He never spoke to him. After this sample was added to Petey Pablo's hip-hop beat Freek-a-Leek, the resulting song went viral on TikTok, where it has garnered over 40 million views and has been the soundtrack to over 8,500 videos in the past month.

The official Harris-Walz campaign account also shared the video. Casa Di and Steve Terrell have had viral success with other songs before. Last year, they collaborated with rapper That Chick Angel on the song One Margarita; the song was also originally influenced by a popular TikTok sample. In an interview with the New York Times, Terrell said that after seeing a video of Vance's speech, they thought his voice was melodic in some way.

Some politicians have recently joined TikTok, just weeks before the social, popular video-sharing app is banned. As the election campaign heats up, Kamala Harris, Tim Wilz, Pete Buttigieg, JD Vance and Donald Trump have also started using TikTok to gain popularity among young voters. However, the social networking app and the US Department of Justice are still in a legal battle that may lead to an app ban. President Joe Biden signed a law in April that would force Chinese company ByteDance to either sell its app or be banned from US app stores for a year. TikTok filed suit, claiming the law unfairly discriminated against the company and was unconstitutional.
