Riley Leonard is now the quarterback and the Fighting Irish have brought several weapons as receivers from the Transfer portal. Jeremiya Love also returns to the backfield after an impressive first season.

One of the biggest storylines of the first week, however, will be Leonard's fight against Elko. They spent the last two years at duke before Elko left to become head coach at Texas A&M and replaced Jimbo Fischer. Both have many questions It feels like you're competing against each other for the first time and it adds to the excitement of the game.

“Of course I have a lot of respect for Riley,” Elko told On3's Andy Staples in February. “He's such a great kid and a great quarterback and a great fighter. I'd pick a lot of quarterbacks I'd rather have on the other sideline in my opening game than him. But it is what it is, and that's the world we live in today. I think there's a lot of mutual respect between the two of us.

“But I think he knows, as I do, that we are both high-class competitors. We won't be cheering each other on for those three and a half hours. And then we'll shake hands and wish each other the best for the rest of the year.”

Texas A&M lost several key players to the transfer portal during the offseason but retained its quarterback. Conner Weigman will be back under center for the Aggies after an injury ended his 2023 season prematurely, and he is already generating some NFL Draft Excitement ahead of his third year in College Station.
