George Floyd's killer Derek Chauvin transferred to new prison after stabbing in prison

Disgraced former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been transferred to another federal prison nine months after he was attacked and stabbed multiple times by a fellow inmate.

The convicted murderer was transferred to the low-security FCI Big Spring prison in Texas on Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed.

Chauvin, 47, is currently serving a 22.5-year state prison sentence for the premeditated murder of George Floyd and a 21-year federal prison sentence for violating Floyd's civil rights.

Floyd, who was Black, died in May 2020 after Chauvin pressed his knee into his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest for a suspected counterfeit $20 bill. The shocking video of his killing, in which Floyd pleaded for help, saying “I can't breathe,” sparked worldwide condemnation and a wave of protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

When contacted by The IndependentThe BOP said it could not discuss the reasons for Chauvin's transfer at this time, citing privacy and security reasons.

However, this happened after Chauvin was stabbed 22 times at FCI Tucson, Arizona prison in November 2023.

Prosecutors allege that fellow inmate and former Mexican Mafia member John Turscak attacked Chauvin with an improvised knife in the prison's law library.

After the attack, Turscak reportedly told investigators that he had planned the stabbing a month earlier, targeting Chauvin because he was a high-profile inmate. He later denied having any desire to kill the disgraced police officer, according to The AP.

Federal prosecutors said Turksac, who was serving a 30-year prison sentence at the time, would have killed Chauvin if correctional officers had not intervened.

Turksac has been charged with assault and is awaiting trial.

Chauvin's transfer to prison came the same day that Thomas Lane, one of three other Minneapolis police officers charged in Floyd's death, was released from federal prison in Colorado.

Lane, 41, was sentenced to three years in prison for aiding and abetting manslaughter and two and a half years for violating Floyd's civil rights after he held and restrained Floyd while Chauvin murdered him.

The other two officers, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, remain behind bars.

The attack on Chauvin was just one of several high-profile attacks on prisoners in recent months.

In July 2023, disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar was stabbed multiple times by a fellow inmate in a Florida prison.

There have also been numerous incidents at the federal prison in Tucson, including in November 2022 when an inmate attempted to shoot a visitor in the head. The Arizona Star reported.
