Deadline Detroit | “Detroit in Black and White”: Defense attorney in the Samantha Woll murder case talks about the trial, judge and verdict

Brian Brown and Michael Jackson-Bolanos

Co-hosts Adolph Mongo, Vanessa Moss, Allan Lengel and Jim Nardone speak with Brian Brown, defense attorney for Michael Jackson-Bolanos, who was charged last year with the murder of downtown Detroit synagogue congregation president Samantha Woll.

He talks about the trial, the judge, the verdict, the ex-boyfriend's confession and what he sees as shortcomings in the police investigation. He also talks about the impact of the case on his practice.

Jackson-Bolanos, 29, was acquitted by a Wayne County District Court jury of first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder. The jury could not agree on the first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree burglary charges, and the judge later dismissed those charges because the actual charges were similar to those of which Jackson-Bolanos was acquitted.

Jackson-Bolanos was sentenced to 18 months to 15 years in prison for lying to investigators. He received credit for 243 days of his sentence and is expected to be released early next year.
