Ashland man dies in police custody at Boone County Jail | Mid-Missouri News

An Ashland man died Friday in the Boone County Jail after becoming unresponsive while being restrained.

William Joseph Gipson, 43, was booked into the Boone County Jail after his arrest in Ashland at around 3:09 p.m., the Boone County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Deputies said Gipson did not cooperate with jail staff during the booking process and was subsequently physically restrained.

Gipson began showing signs of health issues while being handcuffed around 6:34 p.m. Friday. Jail staff responded to the incident and provided medical aid, police said.

Gipson was unresponsive at the time and was resuscitated by jail and medical staff, police said. They were unable to revive him and he died, police said.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the in-custody death. The investigation is ongoing.
