Man in NYPD jail cell in Bronx dies of alleged drug overdose

A man held in a holding cell at a police transit station in the Bronx died of a drug overdose, police said.

The 44-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell at the Transit District 11 headquarters near Yankee Stadium early Saturday morning, police said. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where doctors ruled his death from a drug overdose. The medical examiner will officially determine the cause of death, police said.

The victim had previously been arrested when cops caught him smoking at the 149th St.-Grand Concourse station. Officers then patted him down and found a stash of drugs on him, a police source said.

He was charged with drug possession and violating local law, police said.

According to sources, the man still had drugs hidden in his socks and underwear while in custody.

Police are keeping the victim's identity secret until his family can be notified.
