Man dies in car crash after 6th Precinct police officer crashes into his vehicle, witnesses say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A young man has died after a 6th District police officer allegedly aggressively drove into his vehicle.

The fatal accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday on Canal Street near Live Oak Street in Houston's East End.

The deceased's grieving family told ABC13 that he was only 28 years old and lived about a block from the crash site.

His neighbor, Antonio Briones, heard the impact and rushed to help.

“I took the windshield off and another gentleman and I also took the window off, the driver's side window, to try to check his vitals a little bit to see if he was breathing and I don't think he was responsive. He was not responsive at any point,” Briones said.

Harris County 6th District Internal Affairs Lieutenant Simel Maldonado told ABC13 that preliminary investigations indicate the deputy was on his way to work in his personal vehicle.

Witnesses told ABC13 that the officer was driving on the wrong side of the road. Maldonado confirmed that investigators were told the same thing.

“We have also interviewed some witnesses and are hearing the same story. However, we will let HPD conduct the entire investigation. We ourselves in Harris County will leave no stone unturned,” he said.

Houston police, which is conducting the accident investigation, referred requests for comment on the matter to the 6th Precinct. The 6th Precinct is conducting an internal investigation. The district attorney's office was also on site.

The deputy police officer involved in the accident is currently on leave, according to Maldonado. They were taken to the hospital after the accident and treated for minor injuries.
