As Frank Gore Jr. fights to secure a spot on the Buffalo Bills' regular season roster, his father remains his biggest cheerleader.

Five-time Pro Bowler Frank Gore made his son very happy after the younger Gore rushed for 17 yards for the Bills in their preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday.

Frank Gore Jr. went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft before signing with the Bills in April.

The elder Gore told NFL insider Josina Anderson after the draft that the league “overlooked my son” and that everyone should “be better prepared” for what he will do as a professional.

I just spoke to Frank Gore Sr., who was very touched and happy that his son was in the #Invoices as UDFA:
“We're fine. We're going to Buffalo to do our thing. Tell them they better be ready – trust me. I know what I'm saying. People have been sleeping on my son; they've been sleeping… pic.twitter.com/DcHZyhPo8k

During his first media appearance with the Bills in May, Frank Gore Jr. told reporters that going undrafted was a motivating factor for him.

“It really pushed me,” said Gore told reporters. “I feel that it is impossible to have 257 people [were] better than I was in this draft, but now that this process is over, I'm a Bill. I'm here to compete, and I'm here to push my teammates and the running back room and try to get on the special teams.”

The scouting report on Gore when he entered the NFL wasn't much different from what his father heard after he graduated from Miami in 2005. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com described him as a “compact every-down runner… with good contact balance and the ability to handle a larger workload,” but lacked “the big acceleration and short-space quickness” to consistently create big plays.

Frank Gore Sr. was selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2005 and developed into one of the best running backs of his era. He was named to the Pro Bowl five times, was selected to the All-Pro second team in 2006 and was one of four running backs selected to the All-Decade team in 2010.

Gore finished the 2020 season with exactly 16,000 rushing yards in his career, the third-most in NFL history.

For the Bills, Gore is listed as the fourth running back in the lineup. James Cook is the starter, and Ty Johnson and Ray Davis are the main backups.

Gore started the day with 78 yards from the faceoff line on 18 touches in Buffalo's first two preseason games. Even if he is cut by the Bills when they finalize their 53-man roster, he may have shown enough to earn a spot on another team.
