Dr. Anthony Fauci recovers after hospitalization for West Nile virus

A spokesman told several media outlets that Dr. Anthony Fauci was briefly hospitalized after being infected with the West Nile virus, but is now recovering at home.

Fauci, a former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who became a household name as a member of the White House coronavirus task force, is expected to make a full recovery.

There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment against West Nile virus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Nile virus is the most common cause of mosquito-borne disease in the Americas. About 1 in 150 infected people develop a serious and sometimes fatal illness.

Typical symptoms include fever, aching limbs, rash and nausea.

According to CDC data, 216 cases have been reported in the United States so far this year.
