Mayweather dominates Gotti III in rematch; fires referee during fight!

By James Slater – 25.08.2024 – Comments

Last night in Mexico, things went pretty much as a boxing fan would expect, as Floyd Mayweather dominated John Gotti III in their highly anticipated exhibition rematch. Mayweather won all eight two-minute rounds, with Gotti outmatched the entire time.

The far less experienced boxer never really seemed hurt, but Mayweather schooled Gotti and made him look far more amateur than he did during their first fight. The first fight between Mayweather and Gotti naturally ended in chaos, with Gotti being disqualified and then all hell breaking loose in the ring in the form of a mass brawl.

The only controversy that took place last night occurred in Round 2, when Mayweather got angry at the third man in the ring for interfering too much – Floyd yelled at the referee to “get out of the way!” – and then had him tagged out. It looked like Mayweather had fired the referee!

The Mexican crowd began to boo in the final rounds as Mayweather stormed toward his certain victory. There were no knockdowns and no real action that stood out.

After the fight, Mayweather and Mexican idol Julio Cesar Chavez embraced in the middle of the ring. It is to be hoped that these two greats will not share a ring and have an exhibition fight later this year, as has been (perhaps jokingly) suggested.

But Mayweather will certainly be on the exhibition winning streak for quite some time. As for the beaten and outboxed Gotti, you can guess as well as anyone what will happen next with the grandson of a notorious mob boss.

All results:

  • Victor Ortiz competed in a non-rated exhibition fight against Damian Coria.
  • Curmel Moton knocked out Victor Vasquez in the first round
  • Cesar Vaca secured a majority decision victory over Luis Rodriguez.
  • Aaron Silva stopped Alberto Artiga with a TKO in the third round.
  • Cecilia Rodriguez defeated Arlenn Sanchez by unanimous decision.
