Video shows village in Russia covered in ash after volcanic eruption

According to the United States Geological Survey, a volcano erupted near the country's east coast in Russia just hours before a magnitude 7 earthquake struck.

On Saturday, Shiveluch volcano, located in the country's east, erupted at 11:45 a.m. UTC, causing an ash explosion that sent 32,800 feet into the air, according to an email from the USGS to USA TODAY.

International air traffic and low-flying aircraft could potentially be affected by the outbreak.

Due to the ash emissions, a hazard warning was posted.

Magnitude 7 earthquake follows eruption

Hours later, at 7:10 p.m. UTC, the magnitude 7 earthquake struck east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, 280 miles from the volcano. Moderate to strong earthquakes are common along the fault where the quake occurred, according to the USGS website.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning, but it has since been lifted. There were no reports of major damage, CNN reported. However, buildings are being inspected.

The volcanic eruption began about eight hours before the earthquake, Matt Haney, chief scientist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory, told USA TODAY, adding that he believes the two events are unrelated.
