Calgary man charged with murder of toddler released on bail

A Calgary man accused of killing a toddler was released on bail at his first court appearance Friday.

Winston Campbell, 45, was charged Wednesday with manslaughter in connection with the 2022 death of 2-year-old Olivia Hayden.

On Friday, defense attorney Cory Wilson appeared in court and told Judge Sean Dunnigan that prosecutor Rosalind Greenwood had agreed to release Campbell.

Dunnigan was released on bail on the condition that Campbell avoid alcohol, drugs and places where children are present.

He must not have contact with children other than his own and even then an adult must be present.

There is also a ban on contact with Campbell's ex-girlfriend, the toddler's mother.

The charges were filed this week after police conducted a “comprehensive investigation.”

On September 29, 2022, at around 2 a.m., police and paramedics were called to a home in the southeastern township of Midnapore after receiving an emergency call about a toddler in medical distress.

Paramedics tried to save her life on the way to the hospital, but Olivia was pronounced dead.

The police initially considered the child's death suspicious.

Campbell was arrested 19 months after the murder. He will appear in court again next month.
