Police investigate fatal crash involving stolen SUV in Plainville

An Oxford man is in custody following a serious multi-vehicle crash Saturday night on Route 1 in Plainville. According to Massachusetts State Police, 42-year-old Michael Escolas was traveling at a high rate of speed in a Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on Route 1 when he collided with a Nissan Altima containing a family stopped at a red light at the intersection with Interstate 495 around 8:30 p.m. State Police say Escolas allegedly stole the SUV from a parking lot at Gillette Stadium before the crash. All six occupants of the Nissan, a mother and father with their four children, suffered serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals, including Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. One of the children, age 10, was pronounced dead at the hospital. State troopers monitoring the Kenny Chesney concert operation at Gillette Stadium arrived at the scene along with Plainville police. A total of seven ambulances from the Plainville, North Attleboro, Wrentham, Foxboro, Mansfield and Franklin fire departments responded to the scene to assist with treatment and removal of the injured. Escolas was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence and subsequently transported to an area hospital where he remains in State Police custody. Route 1 southbound at the intersection with Interstate 495 and the exits from Interstate 495 to Route 1 northbound and southbound were closed for approximately three hours while State Police detectives from the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office and accident investigators worked at the scene. The facts and circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.

According to state police, Escolas stole the SUV from a parking lot at Gillette Stadium before the accident.

All six occupants of the Nissan, a mother and father with their four children, suffered serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals, including Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. One of the 10-year-old children was pronounced dead at the hospital.

State police, who were in charge of the Kenny Chesney concert at Gillette Stadium, arrived at the scene along with Plainville police. A total of seven ambulances from the Plainville, North Attleboro, Wrentham, Foxboro, Mansfield and Franklin fire departments were on their way to the scene to assist in treating and transporting the injured.

Escolas was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in the custody of state police.
