Amid ongoing investigations into the gang rape of a minor at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, police on Sunday (August 25, 2024) said they have arrested all five accused in connection with the case.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said that a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been filed at Patel Nagar police station. The police are currently working on collecting evidence against the accused. SSP Singh also asked both electronic and print media as well as online platforms to avoid publishing any unofficial information regarding the case.

“Only the official press releases from the police regarding this incident are considered authorized and published. Apart from that, if anyone sends or publishes any news regarding this incident without official information/confirmation, the sole responsibility lies with the concerned party,” he said.

SSP Ajay Singh also mentioned that Section 23 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, under the procedure for the media, states: No person belonging to any media, studio or photography field shall, without complete or authenticated information, make any report or comment about a child which is likely to damage his reputation or invade his privacy.

The Dehradun SSP added that if any messages are published or sent without authenticated information regarding the incident, legal action can be initiated against the person concerned under Section 23 of the POCSO Act if the crime is found to have been committed.
