Mayweather dominates Gotti again in exhibition rematch in Mexico City | Boxing news

Former world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather once again defeated the grandson of the late New York gangster boss John Gotti III in an exhibition fight and left the audience in Mexico City unimpressed.

Mayweather, 47, dominated Gotti from start to finish on Saturday, despite confusion when the end-of-round bell didn't sound and the referee left the ring mid-fight. The eight-round fight featured two-minute rounds with two-minute rest breaks.

Gotti showed little effort during the fight, provoking the scorn of the 22,000 strong crowd.

Mayweather came back in the first round with right punches to Gotti's head, but Gotti limited himself to containing the punishment.

After two minutes, there was a moment of confusion because the bell did not ring and the fight continued until complaints were heard from Gotti's corner.

There was even more confusion in the second round when Panamanian referee Hector Afu left the ring after Mayweather threw an illegal punch, apparently annoyed by Mayweather's behavior. Mexican referee Alfredo Uruzquieta then took over.

It was not until the fourth round that Gotti landed some heavy blows on Mayweather's body, but they had little effect.

In the sixth and seventh rounds, Mayweather rained down punches on Gotti, who barely defended himself, which angered fans even more.

Mayweather cornered Gotti in the final round, but his opponent held on until the final bell.

Since it was an exhibition fight, there was no official winner.

Saturday's rematch followed an exhibition fight in June 2023 in South Florida that was called off after a brawl broke out between the two fighters' camps.

Mayweather retired from boxing in 2017 after going undefeated through 50 fights, but he continues to compete in fights that do not count toward his career record.

Gotti, 31, who had a 5-1 record in mixed martial arts (MMA) fights before switching to boxing, is the grandson of John Gotti, the head of the Gambino crime family who died in prison in 2002.
