Man accused of shooting his wife turns himself in to St. Cloud police

St. CLOUD, Florida. – A domestic dispute at a St. Cloud home resulted in the death of a woman and the surrender of a man who fired shots when officers arrived, according to police.

Jose Manuel Otero-Fontanez, 48, was arrested Saturday for the shooting death of his wife, a St. Cloud police spokesman said in a news release. Otero-Fontanez is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated abuse of an elderly person, records show.

At around 6:41 p.m., emergency responders received 911 calls from a home on Nottel Drive about a domestic dispute, the release said. When officers arrived, they were met with gunfire but did not return fire and decided to use a drone to enter the home, police said. The drone came under fire once inside.

After a crisis negotiator managed to call Otero-Fontanez and convince him to surrender, police entered the home and found his wife's body in a bathroom, the release said. Two children who were in the home at the time — an adult and a minor — were able to escape unharmed, the release said.

Otero-Fontanez was booked into the Osceola County Jail early Sunday, police said.

“Although we are still in the very early stages of the investigation, the crime that occurred here tonight is tragic and senseless,” Police Chief Douglas Goerke said in a statement. “Our condolences go out to the children who lost their parents here tonight. We will work with them to get the resources they need to deal with what happened here.”
