Child dies in drunk driving accident; suspect stole SUV from Chesney concert: police – NBC Boston

An SUV stolen from a Kenny Chesney concert at Gillette Stadium crashed into a car in Plainville, Massachusetts, killing a 10-year-old child and injuring five other family members, police said Saturday night.

Massachusetts State Police responded to the accident near the intersection of Route 1 and Interstate 495 around 8:30 p.m.

According to police, 42-year-old Michael Escolas of Oxford was speeding south on Route 1 in a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was stolen from the Gillette Stadium parking lot.

Escolas then ran a red light into a Nissan Altima carrying a couple and their four children. They were all taken to the hospital with serious injuries; the 10-year-old was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Police said Escolas was arrested for alleged driving under the influence and taken to a nearby hospital. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney who could comment on his arrest.

Authorities said they were watching the Kenny Chesney concert at Gillette Stadium before arriving at the scene.

A total of five vehicles were damaged in the accident. The intersection was closed for several hours before it could be reopened.

According to the Plainville Fire Department, the seriously injured child was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleborough, the other children to Hasbro Children's Hospital. Three seriously injured adults were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Seven ambulances were called to the scene of the fire, fire officials said.

State police expressed their condolences to the family but did not identify them.

The accident remained under investigation.
