Lions injury overview: Brodric Martin's right knee

Brodric Martin, the Lions' 2023 third-round pick, injured his right knee late in the 3rd quarter of the team's final preseason game against the Steelers. This is an important preseason injury for Martin, who the Lions hope can make a leap in productivity in Year 2.

The injury video is blurry, but you can see Martin take a hard step on his right leg as a Steeler lineman shoves him. This mechanism could cause hyperextension of the knee, which can lead to a bone bruise and strain of the knee ligaments.

On the field, the Lions' doctor appeared to perform a Lachman test to check the anterior cruciate ligament, which Martin likely passed. Dan Campbell confirmed a hyperextended knee after the game. An MRI will likely be performed to look for knee ligament or cartilage damage.

DATE OF INJURY: 08/24/24

SUSPECTED DIAGNOSIS: Hyperextension of the right knee with bone bruise

PROGNOSIS: Based on limited video and initial reports, I expect the strain to be mild. There's a good chance he can play in the opener, but depending on how the knee responds, he could miss 1-2 games. Assuming there are no surprises on the MRI, this is a minor setback and I don't anticipate any long-term issues. For comparison, Sam LaPorta didn't miss a single game last year after straining his left knee in Week 18 and went on to perform well in the playoffs.
