Arlin Sangster

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau-area man accused of taking part in the fatal beating of a Stevens Point man is due in court Monday.

Arlin Sangster is scheduled for a week-long trial beginning at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow on charges of involuntary manslaughter of an elderly person and theft of personal property. Both sides held a closing hearing on Friday to wrap up the presentation of evidence and testimony.

The 20-year-old is accused of being part of a group that beat up Donald J. Mitchell in a parking lot in downtown Stevens Point. Witnesses say they searched Mitchell's pickup truck and when the 61-year-old confronted the group, they began beating him. Doctors say he has several broken ribs and nearly every bone in his face is broken.

Mitchell had armed himself with a pair of pliers, which were found next to his body, before being taken to a local hospital. He succumbed to his injuries the next day.

The maximum sentence for involuntary manslaughter is 40 years in prison. Sangster could receive an additional six years because of Mitchell's age.
